Known as the Tigress of Haiti, Sanité Belair served as a sergeant and lieutenant in the Haitian Revolution. She and her husband led many successful rebellions freeing enslaved people around the country. After being captured and condemned to death, the story goes that she requested the same firing squad her husband would receive. When denied due to her gender, she refused to wear a blindfold and forced their hand. Her last words were, “Viv libète, anba esclavaj!” or “long live freedom from slavery!”

100% of the profit from the sale of this item will be donated to TAP’s coffee table book project titled, Stories of Movement. This project seeks to highlight the experiences of the Haitian diaspora whether through immigration or refugeeism.
