Considered one of the founding fathers of Haiti, after Toussaint L’ouverture was captured by the French, Jean-Jacques Dessalines became leader of the Haitian Revolution. Under the 1805 constitution he was the first ruler of an independent Haiti. He is known for his call to “koupe tet, boule kay”, or to cut off the heads and burn the homes. Under his reign, Haiti became the first country to permanently abolish slavery.
